About Hang Seng China Future-themed CSR Projects

Seed the Future to Protect Ecosystem — Restore Forests and Mangroves, Unlocking the Power of Nature

Protecting the nature is essential for achieving carbon neutrality, enhancing climate resilience, and supporting the development of communities and residents. In 2022, Hang Seng China will invest more in ecological restoration projects, and cooperate with the SEE Foundation to carry out Nature-based Solutions in forests and coastal wetlands, aiming to enhance biodiversity, climate resilience, and ecosystem services.

Hang Seng China will initiate 3-year blue carbon ecosystem conservation for coastal wetlands in Fujian Province. This project will restore and plant mangroves on the land of 100 mu (6.66 hectares) to recover coastal wetland mangrove ecosystem and protect marine ecosystem and biodiversity. It also tries to explore community engagement in mangrove conservation to help the residents respond to climate change and natural disasters so as to promote coordinated and sustainable development of ecological conservation and community economy. In addition, we will carry out forest protection and restoration in Sichuan Province. The project will plant 28,750 firs and maples on the land of 500 mu (33.33 hectares) to restore the habitats of rare and endangered species and other wildlife, improve the living environment of wild animals, protect local biodiversity and enhance the ability of the local ecosystem and communities to adapt to climate change. The two ecological restoration projects are expected to sequester 7,550 tons of carbon dioxide in the next 30–40 years.

Seed the Future to Breed Harvests — Carry out Sustainable Utilization of Traditional Germplasm Resources to Improve Biodiversity

In 2022, Hang Seng China continues to carry out the conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity resources in Mojiang Hani Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, to explore community-based conservation and sustainable utilization of traditional purple rice resources, protect agricultural biodiversity, and enhance the ability of local communities to cope with climate change.

In June 2021, Hang Seng China, as the first foreign financial institution in China that is concerned about the conservation of traditional germplasm resources, jointly rolled out the project with Guangdong Harmony Foundation in Yunnan Province. Since the project already launched two years, Hang Seng China has deeply explored the connotation of the project, continued to promote the traditional purple rice germplasm protection plan, and used purple rice as a value bridge to build a connection mechanism between community ecological protection and sustainable development. Hang Seng China has carried out actions from multiple dimensions, such as consolidating the achievements of seed source bases, cultural inheritance of village communities, and rejuvenating the appearance of villages, to enhance local villagers' awareness, cultural identity and ability of traditional purple rice planting, and to stimulate villagers' endogenous motivation for development. At the same time, we strive to empower local women and inherit traditional culture, convey voices on international stages such as COP27 and COP15, and expand the influence of the project.
